The Master Cleanse is a liquid diet created by created by Stanley Burroughs an alternative medicine performer in 1941. It was promoted by Peter Glickman in the 1990s. It was described as a detoxification program by Stanley Burroughs and a weight loss diet that removes many harmful toxins from your body. Burroughs also described this as a cure for ulcers and general panacea which has been unproven. However there has been absolutely no scientific evidence that this program removes any toxins from anybodies body at all and this diet has only found to achieve temporary weight loss rather then the long term effect many people have hoped for when taking this program. Also even though this liquid diet has shown to be harmless over a short term, it can be harmful over a long term.

The master cleanse is said to be a way to cleanse the body and remove cravings or addiction to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and other addictive substances. The cleanse itself is not a very comfortable time for the dieter; no solid food is allowed for the entire cleanse. The only thing you are allowed to ingest is concoctions made from fresh lemons, cayenne pepper, grade B maple syrup, and the person undergoing this treatment is allowed a laxative tea.
For people in good health this diet is very much useless for its detoxification uses because their body already disposes of normal everyday toxins through bodily organs such as the lungs, kidney, liver, and other eliminator organs. So if anyone is planning on taking this master cleanse for its cleansing, detoxification values they should probably think again because their natural body already disposes of toxins and there is absolutely no need for them to go to such lengths simply to dispose of everyday toxins.
There are also other problems that come with this master cleanse weight loss program, a nutritionist by the name of Jane Clark has pointed out a lack of essential nutrients that people will have to endure who take the program. There is a deficiency of proteins, vitamins, and minerals and these deficiencies can result in serious problems. A few results of these deficiencies are headaches and fewer calories then are needed for optimum functioning and health for short term users of this liquid diet and this diet is potentially extremely harmful over the long term; resulting in serious illnesses and poor health.
Proponents of this cleanse to not promote is solely for its detoxification values. This liquid diet is also for its alleged weight loss benefits. Because it is extremely low on calories, if it is followed people who use it will be sure to lose weight very fast. This program is defined as a extreme fad or a crash diet because people who lose weight while using this liquid diet will surely regain once they are finished with their dieting. Scientists in Hungary have shown this diet to be extremely dangerous to the body’s peripheral nervous systems and has shown to be a bad way to lose weight.
